Christianity and Politics
With the 2008
presidential race well under way, certainly Christian voters and
more specifically the body of Christ should be concerned with the
political platform of each United States presidential candidate.
It is the God-given right and responsibility of every born-again
believer to ensure that they not only pray for the right candidate
to be placed in office, but the believer also has an added
responsibility to exercise his or her right to vote for that candidate as
well.
We can no longer have
our country run by those who say they are Christians but in
actuality, their fruits do not line up with the Word of God.
(Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the
tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his
fruit – Matthew 12:33).
We must ask God for
wisdom and spiritual discernment when choosing a man or woman to
lead our country. Presidential hopefuls will swing one way today on
certain issues, but quite another on tomorrow dependent upon the
voters they are trying to reach. These are not the characteristics
of people who should lead our land. Why, because such candidates
are doubled-minded. James 1:8 reminds us that
a
double minded man is unstable in all his ways. As well,
verse 6 explains it further by saying that such a man
wavereth like a wave of the sea
driven with the wind and tossed. In other words, such a man or
woman might certainly be pulled in by special interest groups,
greed, self aggrandizement, or their own personal agendas.
In essence, what our
nation is most in need of is a candidate who will stand on the
righteous principles of the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and
one who will not totter, teeter, or waver based upon the populace of
mankind. When the wishes of God are ignored, the result is that our
nation will begin to flounder. And we are seeing that now! The
moral compass of our country has taken a downward spiral what with
it’s growing degradation, violence, sexual immorality, oppression,
deception, apostasy, and greed. Sadly, because of it's growing
apathy of God, our nation is also experiencing dire economic crisis,
famine, earthquakes, floods, and other calamitous catastrophes.
Those with spiritual eyes know these problems to be a direct result
of our nation turning it's back on God.
If we want our nation
to be blessed and to again be a land of plenty, we must turn to God
for help. The Bible tells us in 2 Chronicles 7:14
that If my people, which are called by
my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and
turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will
forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
Psalms 33:12 reminds us in this
well-timed passage of scripture: Blessed is the nation whose God
is the Lord; and the people whom He hath chosen for His own
inheritance.
Our nation is in
desperate need of God-fearing candidates who still believe in the
inerrant scriptures of the Bible regardless of the growing apostasy
in country or the politically correct who are shrouded in secular humanism and
who assert that there should be a separation of Church and State.
On the contrary, the
Church or more specifically the Body of Christ should be a viable
force in the affairs of our nation from the local level to the
national level, from the appellate court to the supreme court, from
the nonprofit agency to the corporate enterprise, from the grammar
school to the Ivy league university, from the town hall newspaper to
the media conglomerates, and yes, even in some of our
churches wherein a growing number of our church leaders are
actually matriculating from seminaries but who question the legitimacy of the
Virgin Birth. This is a travesty!
In summation, we must
seek out candidates who love God with their whole hearts and not
just with their mouths. What this means is that we can no
longer vote for candidates because they say they with their mouths
that they are Republican or Democrat, Conservative or Liberal. Nor
should our choices be based upon ethnicity or gender along. We must
vote for that candidate that loves God with all of his or heart and one who
will not be swayed by capitalistic greed, self-gratification, or is
apathetic to the needs of the tired, the poor, the huddled masses
yearning to be free.
How do we know then,
who is the best candidate! Again, we will have to seek God and
ask Him for wisdom and discernment regarding our choices. |
